Digital classroom vs traditional classroom: comparing academic results

It is 7:10 in the morning and Marcela, head of academics at a school of a thousand students, walks down the second-floor corridor with a coffee in her hand. To her left, class 5B already has the interactive screen switched on and a map of the Americas projected at almost life size. Both groups are covering the same topic. Both sit the same assessment on Friday. And Marcela has spent months turning the same question over in her head: which of those two classrooms is learning better?

It is the question hundreds of schools and universities are asking today when they compare the digital classroom with the traditional one. It is worth answering calmly, because what emerges in the end is far more interesting than a winner and a loser.

What is a digital classroom and how does it differ from the traditional classroom?

Here comes the twist in the story. While Marcela was documenting the advantages of the digital classroom, the class 5A teacher showed her something that made her rethink the whole exercise.

That Tuesday, the debate about migration lasted forty minutes. No screens, no devices, with the chairs in a circle. Two students who almost never spoke went at each other with arguments. The teacher read their faces, adjusted the pace and knew exactly when to step in.

The hybrid model: what a lesson day that combines both worlds looks like

Six months later, class 5A and class 5B work the same way. And the day looks more or less like this.

The lesson opens on the interactive screen with a three-minute video and a question the students answer from their devices. The teacher sees the answers in real time and spots the group's weak point.

Fifteen minutes in, the tablets are put away and the chairs are moved. Then comes the conversation, the debate, the handwriting exercise. Here the traditional classroom is in charge.

At the close, the teacher assigns a different reinforcement activity on the educational platform for each group of students, based on what was seen at the start. Each of them works through it at home at their own pace, and the teacher arrives the next day knowing exactly where to pick up.

That balance answers something every teacher knows: very different learning styles live side by side in the same classroom, and no single tool covers them all.

  • The infrastructure that already exists. Connectivity, power points, the condition of the room. It is worth knowing what you have before deciding what to install.
